The isolation of pure components out of mixtures is of large importance in many industrial processes. Various separation principles and mechanisms can be exploited. Often additional components have to be added to the mixtures to facilitate the separations or even to render them possible. Examples of applying additives will be presented considering e.g. distillation, extraction, adsorption and crystallization processes together with theoretical concepts of identifying them.
