The World Scenario Check, one of the main tools of Volkswagen’s foresight unit, has created a synopsis of megatrends affecting the mobility sector. The presentation will give a brief introduction into foresight at Volkswagen AG while at the same time adressing some key future challenges for a global OEM. One of the major challenges the automotive industry will be facing in the coming decade is related to the impro-vement of resource efficiency in both the use of materials in the production process and the efficient use of fuels. Given this crucial challenge, the cooperations between OEMs and the chemical industry will intensify, as developing materials with novel properties, e.g. nanomaterials, better catalysts, supercapacitators for battery electric vehicles, biopolymers, fuel-cells, fuel additivies etc. is something that can only be done in close cooperation between suppliers and OEMs. Besides mehre technologi-cal development, automotive OEMs also will need to address questions of low-entry vehicles, serving the mobility needs of people at the bottom of the pyramid, and coming up with innovative integrated mobility services for the mature markets and especially for urban mobility in large agglomerations and megacities.

Wolfgang Müller-Pietralla is the Head of Future Research and Trend Transfer at Volkswagen AG, Wolfsburg. He and his team analyze social and technological deve-lopments and their implications for the future of the automotive industry.
