ISC3 is an independent, international institution promoting and developing sustainable chemistry solutions worldwide. Chemistry is facing the biggest challenge in its history: Basically, it has to reinvent itself in order to progress towards sustainable chemistry and a circular economy. This implies new business opportunities, new jobs, and a key contribution to achieve the UN Sustainable Development Goals. The ISC3 is committed to shape this transformation in cooperation with all stakeholders. Innovation in chemistry enables progress in areas as diverse as energy supply and storage, mobility, consumer products, agriculture, or health. Innovation in chemistry is therefore crucial far beyond the limits of the chemical industry. Therefore, the centre takes a multi-stakeholder approach, targeting policymakers, the public and private sectors, academia and civil society.
Located at DECHEMA in Frankfurt, Germany, the ISC3 Innovation Hub supports innovation in the field of sustainable chemistry to contribute to the urgent societal challenges. Jointly with a global network of partners, the ISC3 catalyzes tech transfer from science to industry and between regions and countries. One of the core innovation activities is the ISC3 Global Start-up Service supporting entrepreneurs in becoming Sustainable Chemistry Changemakers. The annual ISC3 Innovation Challenge awards outstanding projects from all over the world and promotes the most promising innovative solutions in the field of Sustainable Chemistry. The Innovation Challenge Award Ceremony and presentations of the finalists is held in the frame of the Investor Forum. The Investor Forum organized yearly by ISC3 Innovation Hub, brings together founders, investors, scientists as well as decision-makers from industry and politics, with the aim of supporting and exploring financial mechanisms for Sustainable Chemistry innovations, as well as connecting innovators with potential international investors through pitching sessions and innovation showcases of cutting-edge entrepreneurs and speed dating.
The ISC3 is hosted by the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) in cooperation with Leuphana University Lüneburg as ISC3 Research & Education Hub and DECHEMA Society for Chemical Engineering and Biotechnology (DECHEMA e. V.) as ISC3 Innovation Hub. The Centre was founded in 2017 on the initiative of the Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation, Nuclear Safety, and Consumer Protection (BMUV, formerly BMU) and the Federal Environment Agency (UBA).
