Himmelfahrtstagung on Bioprocess Engineering 2023 - Novel production routes and processes for bio-pharmaceuticals and industrial bioeconomy

Pre-Conference Workshop

How to move from lab to production for launching a product

The ultimate goal of metabolic and biochemical engineering is to create novel products and bioprocesses for commercialization. Whereas scientific and technical aspects are typical matters of training programs in universities, the sensitive steps of launching a product and process, which includes transferring technology from labs to production sites, are rarely addressed. This workshop will deal with the real process development and implementation of the key cephalosporin antibiotic intermediate 7-ACA from scratch up to a level > 1000 tons per year. Cephalosporin C is produced by fermentation, purified by large scale chromatography and the side-chain removed by enzymatic cleavage. The workshop will address the entire value-chain from fermentation, downstream-processing, enzyme development, purification and immobilization as well final cleavage conditions, product purification and isolation as well as environmental issues and the development of a sustainable bioprocess. Students will learn what the key questions are and how actions should be structured to make the novel product / process a success.
