The aim of PEM CIRCLE is to develop and demonstrate digital solutions that overcome existing barriers to the implementation of the circular economy in the field of PEM electrolysis. Using the example of the polymer exchange membrane (PEM) electrolysis stack, a key component of the renewable hydrogen economy, a holistic approach is being pursued to extend the life cycle of these systems, increase resource efficiency and open up new recycling paths for critical raw materials such as platinum and iridium.
At the heart of the project is the creation of a direct, ecologically and economically sound basis for decision-making on key R strategies such as repair, remanufacturing and recycling. This is achieved through the development of a digital decision-making tool that enables condition assessment and the selection of optimal recycling pathways.
Another goal is the integrated development of hardware and software for the control and interaction of sensor technology, digital twins and decision-making tools. To this end, system boundaries are recorded and interfaces characterised in order to enable digitally controlled, holistic recycling paths for the various R strategies. This not only facilitates implementation in the field of PEM electrolysis, but also ensures transferability to other applications and industries through this challenging use case.
