DECHEMA Status Paper „Schedule Risk Analysis for Capital Projects“

Time is money - in the process industry as much as anywhere else. In times of increasing technical complexity, global supply chains, and stringent regulatory requirements, schedule deviations and delays represent a key project risk. A sound Schedule Risk Analysis (SRA) enables early identification of uncertainties, the development of realistic schedules, and the transparent visualization of critical paths. It is thus an essential tool for efficient project management, reliable cost and schedule forecasting, and decision-oriented risk control.

The new DECHEMA paper combines theory and practice, offering concise methods, application examples, and international best‑practice approaches. It demonstrates how cost and schedule risks can be seamlessly integrated—from early conceptual design to project implementation. Among the key topics covered are:

  • the integration of the phase‑gate process with systematic risk management,

  • practical approaches for high‑level and detailed analyses,

  • and the use of Monte Carlo simulations to quantitatively assess potential project delays.

The paper is particularly aimed at project managers, engineering firms, operating companies, investors, and decision‑makers who seek to systematically manage schedule and cost risks and enhance the planning reliability of their projects.
