Green hydrogen production depends on reliable water resources, making water availability and governance critical sustainability factors. Using Chile as a case study, this publication examines how international sustainability requirements—particularly those stemming from European Union regulations, certification schemes, and global frameworks—align with the country’s water governance. It assesses water demand across hydrogen value chains, mitigation options such as desalination and water-efficient technologies, and Chile’s regulatory and institutional framework. The report concludes that Chile has strong foundations for sustainable hydrogen development but identifies opportunities to strengthen cumulative impact assessment, long-term water management, and desalination governance to support the sector’s future growth.
