Karlsruhe, Germany has been in the centre of scientific attention in the area of materials for energy applications from May, 12th to 16th 2013. Around 600 international scientists and engineers from over 38 countries convened for the 2nd Conference on Materials for Energy, jointly organised by DECHEMA, DGM, KIT and HIU. The conference was chaired by Horst Hahn (KIT), Cynthia Volkert (Göttingen University), Maximillian Fleischer (Siemens AG), Nae-Lih Wu (National Taiwan University) and Jim DeYoreo (Pacific Northwest National Laboratory). In 5 plenary lectures, 232 contributed lectures as well as over 250 posters the participants engaged in numerous discussions about all material-related aspects to energy applications, ranging from "Electrochemical Energy Storage", "Biomass and Biofuels" to "Materials for extreme environments". Furthermore, a dedicated panel discussion "Strategies for tackling the challenge of water splitting" critically evaluated the state-of-the-art and a special symposium "New (nano-) materials in energy technology" was organised by the winners of the Kepler-Award by the European Academy of Sciences. In addition, 15 exhibitors presented their products and services at the conference venue.
